The Texas Water Safari bills itself as the ‘World’s Toughest Canoe Race’ and I can’t imagine a more difficult one. The race starts and the headwaters of the San Marcos River and ends 260 miles later in Seadrift, Texas.
The beginning of the race has all the excitement of any major endurance race. There are long time veterans who have competed for years and there are folks out for the their first attempt. There’s a great mix of people all ultimately competing against themselves.
This year flooding and high water forced the race’s start to be rescheduled twice. Paddlers set of from Spring Lake at 9 a.m. sharp and the more than 90 boats looked spectacular from above.
